A Catholic reader will remember our Lord's dramatic confrontation with the representative of highest earthly power on the day of his arrest, Pontius Pilate, who asked him, "What is truth?"

Recent events in the United States have shocked us all into the realization that Pilate's question is a most urgent and salient one for our political community, writes Holy Cross Fr. Bill Dailey in a commentary for NCR.

"A striking response to the events of Jan. 6 was the decision of Twitter to remove then-President Donald Trump from its platform permanently," Dailey writes. "… Social media platforms have come to play such a central role in our lives, especially with so many of us spending nearly all our time in our homes and unable to interact in ordinary ways, that even if we know Twitter is not bound by the First Amendment, it seemed as if something might be happening to our freedom of speech."

"Without question, there are serious and complicated issues involved in how social media might improve or distort our common conversation, nationally and globally," Dailey continues. "… But those worries and complications can wait for another day — the removal of Donald Trump from Twitter was long overdue."

** After abortion legalization, Argentine church searches for a new path ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

Argentina's recent legalization of abortion has been seen as a significant defeat for the influence of the local Catholic Church, coming 10 years after its leaders also failed in their efforts to stop the passage of same-sex marriage.

Worsening the feeling of defeat was the active role that Catholic women played in the campaign to legalize abortion, citing their own personal experiences of dangerous clandestine procedures and a desire to make their own decisions.

Members of the Catholic hierarchy seemed to know they were fighting a lost cause, according to Fortunato Mallimaci, a sociologist at the University of Buenos Aires.

"They only repeated the same kind of reactionary arguments that were presented in the time of the approval of divorce [in 1987] and of same-sex marriage [in 2010]," Mallimaci told NCR. "The church knew that the dispute had already been decided."
