Dear John,

We have wrapped up our first full week of the 2021 session and are continuing to advocate for a variety of issues to increase equality across Virginia. We are already seeing tremendous progress on our key issues. Four important bills for LGBTQ Virginians passed out of the House of Delegates this week!

Delegate Mark Sickles’ HB 1848 passed with resounding support 99-0 after a substitution recommended by the General Laws committee. This is a great win for ending discrimination based on disability in employment.

HB 2130, introduced by Delegate Alfonso Lopez, which would establish the Virginia LGBTQ+ Advisory Board, passed 57-42.

HB 1948, introduced by Delegate Mark Levine to require reporting of bias-based police profiling based on sexual orientation and gender identity, also passed 57-42. HB 1948 has now been referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.

Delegate Dawn Adams’ HB 1805, passed 56-43 with substitutions proposed in the Health, Welfare and Institutions committee. HB 1805 has now been referred to the committee on Rehabilitation and Social Services in the Senate. The companion bill, SB 1366 introduced by Senator George Barker, has been reported out from the Rehabilitation and Social Services committee with substitute (9-4, with 2 abstentions) Through these bills, the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services would be required to include LGBTQ older Virginians in the category of greatest social need as defined in the Older Americans Act.

Additionally, in the House of Delegates, HB 1864 proposed by Delegate Cia Price, was recommended for reporting by the Professions/Occupations and Administrative Process subcommittee (5-3).

In the Senate, Senator Jennifer Boysko’s SB 1321, which would allow second-parent adoption, was reported from the Rehabilitation and Social Services committee with amendments (11-1, with 3 abstentions). It has now been referred to the Finance and Appropriations committee.

Unfortunately, SB 1203, introduced by Senator Ghazala Hashmi, was tabled in the Judiciary committee 10-5.

Take Action Now

LGBTQ Virginians saw historic victories for legal equality last year, but there’s more work to be done to address the disparities facing our communities. With your support, we will make history again by advancing LGBTQ equality at the 2021 General Assembly.

Use the power of your voice to urge your delegate and senator to support pro-equality legislation. Together, our calls for equality will ring loud and clear, demanding LGBTQ Virginians be a priority in lawmaking. Take Action today to stand up for equality!

Bagels & Bills

Start your day off right by satisfying your appetite for equality! Join us for our Bagels & Bills series every Monday morning during the General Assembly session.

You will find out how to support legislation impacting LGBTQ Virginians and learn easy ways to connect with legislators virtually.

Our next event is Monday, January 25 at 8:00am, and we’ll hear from advocates on HIV law modernization and the fight to repeal the anti-LGBTQ conscience clause for adoption and foster care agencies. Make sure you register today for your chance to win a Panera gift card.

Transgender Student Protections

Support trans youth! The VA Department of Education’s public comment forum on trans student protections is still receiving disturbing anti-trans comments by the day. Don’t let them shape the narrative about our young people -- we must stand up loudly and proudly in support of trans and non-binary youth in our public schools.

Submit a public comment today and make sure to put “support” in your title.
