 LATEST ANALYSIS

 FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • President Biden announced a welcoming and inclusive vision for immigration during his first day in office. The legislative proposal addresses how the new administration plans to reform and modernize the U.S. immigration system.

The American Immigration Council has a range of resources that explain the current system, including:

 ACROSS THE NATION

  • A federal court halted most of a Trump administration rule that would have drastically increased the fees people must pay to defend against deportation in immigration court. The fee rule would have increased the filing fees for applications, appeals, and motions in removal proceedings by as much as 800% if it had gone into effect. The substantial increases would have denied access to justice for low-income individuals seeking a fair day in court.

The American Immigration Council, the National Immigration Law Center and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher challenged the rule.

  • A federal court upheld protections granted in court to class members in the Council’s ongoing litigation who had been subject to the government’s metering policy and were denied asylum eligibility.

The case is being litigated by the American Immigration Council, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Southern Poverty Law Center, and the law firm of Mayer Brown LLP.

 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“President Biden’s new vision for immigration reform is extraordinary and a welcome development for America, including the millions of people who are caught up in an outdated immigration system that no longer meets the needs of the nation. The American Immigration Council welcomes this proposal to begin to create a fair and just immigration system.”

–Jorge Loweree, Policy Director at the American Immigration Council
