Earlier this week, 16-year old environmental activist Greta Thunberg took the stage at the United Nations and gave an intensely powerful speech about world leaders’ failure to take action on climate change.

"This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school, on the other side of the ocean. You all come to us young people for hope. How dare you? You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words, and yet I'm one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing."

She’s right. The adults in power have utterly failed the next generation by refusing to take the bold action necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

But instead of listening to courageous youth activists like Greta, the GOP and their right-wing supporters are attacking and making fun of her. It’s all over Twitter, and on Fox News, one conservative contributor mocked Greta, calling her “a mentally ill Swedish child.” Completely out of order!

It’s proof that too many in power, especially the Republican party, do not take the greatest threat to our planet seriously. If we’re going to take action in the next 11 years before scientists warn it’s too late, it’s critical we continue to elect progressive leaders like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey who will push for bold action like the Green New Deal.

DFA proudly endorsed AOC and Sen. Markey among other progressive leaders committed to climate change, like first-term representatives Mike Levin, Joe Neguse, and Ayanna Pressley just to name a few. In fact, we only endorse candidates who are devoted to climate action, because our country and our planet cannot afford anything less.

As youth activists like Greta continue to stand up and lead the way, we cannot let them down. Let’s do everything in our power to put progressives in office and take the transformative steps necessary to save current and future generations from climate catastrophe.
