On Wednesday, President Biden signed an executive order ending Trump's unprecedented policy attempting to exclude noncitizens from the census data used for allocating seats in congress.
But it's worth looking back at Trump's catastrophically failed quest to rig the 2020 Census to secure more political power for the GOP.
In 2017, the Trump administration announced the decision to add a citizenship question to the census under the guise of better enforcing the Voting Rights Act. It was later exposed the real motivation was to underrepresent communities of color, paving the way for even more gerrymandered maps.
The Supreme Court found the citizenship question unlawful in 2019 -- but Trump answered with an executive order to compile citizenship data from other sources. And in 2020, he refused to extend deadlines for collecting census data amid the pandemic -- stifling the count so that his administration would have time to use citizenship data to skew redistricting apportionment numbers.
This week, hours before the end of the administration, Trump-appointed U.S. Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham resigned after whistleblowers exposed his attempt to rush a report with incomplete -- but potentially extremely damaging -- data on noncitizens.
That brings us back to President Biden's executive order. On day one, Biden revoked Trump's policy to exclude noncitizens from the apportionment count and committed to ensuring the Census Bureau has time to complete an accurate count.
This week was a big win.
I wanted to give you an update because this organization was part of the grassroots effort to hold the Trump administration accountable to an accurate and just census count -- the foundation of fair maps!
The next step? Holding map drawers accountable when they use this census data to draw new district lines. We have already launched multiple advocacy campaigns in states where legislators are trying to dodge accountability. Will you help fund these calls for transparency?
