Speaking to POLITICO, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev stated that the relationship between the United States and Russia is of “great concern” and that “something has to be done...in order to normalize relations.”
We can't say we don't agree. Trump won his presidency with Russian interference. There's a reason he and his cronies met with Russian officials prior to and throughout his presidency. There's a reason that, knowing our country was being cyberattacked by a foreign power, Trump pretended nothing was happening.
He sold out this country, and now Biden must pick up the pieces. We know we're in a good place to do that. Biden has emphasized that his priority is restoring our world standing, strengthening our alliances, and reminding our foes who we are. And when it comes to Russia, Gorbachev believes the relationship is “salvageable.”
But we're facing a long road ahead. It wasn't too long ago that far-right extremists broke into the Capitol building, ran into Speaker Pelosi's office, and stole her laptop in an alleged effort to sell it to Russia. That intent sends a message to us and to our adversaries.
Biden is carrying a heavy burden on his shoulders, but he can't rebuild our country on his own. Now, we're focused on ensuring that this administration has the structural support it needs to combat extremism at home to rebuild our relationships abroad. But to have a true impact, we need to meet our grassroots goals, and right now, we're falling behind.
