I have an important request for you today. I want to ask you to make a donation to support our fight to pass the Green New Deal. But before I ask, I first want to express my deepest appreciation for all you did to put us in this position.
Our movement showed up — not just in my primary but on Election Day, and then once again in Georgia. Thanks to your efforts we defeated Donald Trump, held the House, and took back the Senate. That is incredible, and it is a testament to your grassroots organizing and small-dollar donations.
But as we’ve said all along, the election was just a beginning. The real work begins now, and it has never been more urgent for us to deliver meaningful, progressive change for working people. Mitch McConnell has made clear he does not intend to give an inch, and we’re operating off of the slimmest possible margin. That is why I need your support.
A lot of people in the media and political establishment seemed to think that progressives would acquiesce to moderation. That somehow we would settle for tweaks to an extremely broken system and another uneven recovery.
The age of incrementalism is over.
We have a mandate. 81 million people voted for our ideas and delivered a Democratic trifecta in Washington. There is no room for Mitch McConnel to demand we unilaterally disarm or give up on implementing our progressive ideas.
That is why we must end the filibuster, a Jim Crow relic, that has been used to block legislation that would provide justice and equity for decades.
These battles that are ahead — the ones that if we win will meaningfully change working people’s lives — will be difficult. They may require us to take on members of our own party. But I do not believe voters delivered the presidency, House and Senate to Democrats just for us to allow Mitch McConnell to continue ruling from the minority.
We must continue organizing and building progressive power — make clear that we will not settle for incremental changes. That’s why I’m asking you to support our efforts today.
Thank you in advance for pitching in if you are able to. I would not ask if it was not important.
