This was a week I will never forget.
Joe Biden becoming the 46th President of the United States and Kamala Harris’s historic ascension to the vice presidency. Donald Trump leaving the White House for the last time.
While I may be sleeping better at night (literally and figuratively), I know we cannot simply move on. There is no return to “normalcy” after the past four years of racism, corruption, and Donald Trump’s assaults on our democracy.
I’m a broken record at this point, but I’ll say it again: Donald Trump was a symptom of dysfunction in our political system, not the root cause, and defeating him alone is not enough. We have our work cut out for us to build our democracy back better -- to build a truly representative democracy.
This is not a moment for incrementalism.
The first step is accountability. That means convicting Donald Trump for inciting a violent, white supremacist insurrection and disqualifying him from public office permanently. It also means accountability for every American and every member of Congress who participated.
The second step is passing bold reforms to strengthen our democracy. We need to root out corruption, combat racist voter suppression, protect voting rights, and break down barriers to progress (like the filibuster!) that conservatives have abused for far too long.
So in the first 100 days of this new presidency, Stand Up America will be prioritizing five bold democracy reforms that our new Congress should pass and President Biden should sign into law:
Visit each link to learn more about what’s in these bold bills, why they are so important, and how you can lend a hand to the fight. Share them with your friends and family to make sure we continue to build the momentum and popular will to get them done.
Let me be clear: Passing these reforms will take time, and it won’t be easy, particularly given the filibuster. But without reforming our democracy, conservatives will continue to block progress for the American people, from climate action and gun control to economic fairness.
We cannot afford to leave ourselves open to another Trump presidency -- or worse. We’re going to have to be more dedicated and louder than ever to get these reforms passed and build our democracy back better.
As we fight at the federal level we will also continue our work at the state and local level to combat corruption and protect voting rights, from campaign finance reform to automatic voter registration.
I’m looking forward to the year ahead and rebuilding our democracy by your side.
Thanks for all you do.
