Donald Trump was willing to sink even deeper than we already thought to remain in power.
As reported by The New York Times last night, Trump was plotting to replace the acting Attorney General (who took over after Bill Barr slithered off) with a MAGA sycophant who was ready and willing to abuse the powers of the Department of Justice in an illegitimate maneuver to overturn the election results in Georgia.
This is after Trump tried to bully the Georgia Secretary of State into abetting his attempted coup d’etat.
And just days before Trump incited a seditionist horde of MAGA adherents numbering in the thousands to lay siege to the United States Capitol.
We also learned yesterday that the Senate trial following Trump’s impeachment by the House — for an unprecedented second time — will begin on February 9.
This is a bright-line test for every member of the United States Senate.
Any senator who does not vote to convict Trump — given all the incontrovertible facts about his incitement of the Capitol insurrection as well as his underhanded and illegal attempts to remain in power — is confessing that he or she does not believe in democracy, the rule of law, or the Constitution.
Any senator who does not vote to convict Trump is saying, in essence: “I am willing to abide sedition, authoritarianism, and even fascism — at least if I think there is a price to be paid for standing up for democracy.”
Tell your senators:
When Donald Trump stands trial in the Senate, you must vote to convict. If you do not, you will be in violation of your oath of office, your duty as a senator, and your obligation to defend our democracy.
Add your name.
Thank you for taking action.

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
