Dear John,
What a week! I don’t know about you, but after a long four years, it truly feels like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. Now, we feminists get to push forward, instead of constantly struggling to fight back or simply hold the line on women’s rights—and what an exciting opportunity that is.
One thing is clear to me: we are at a truly transformational moment in this country. We are part of a shift to a new era of gender equality in the United States, with feminist women holding some of the most consequential levers of power.
Kamala Harris, a Black woman of South Asian descent, is the first woman vice president; President Joe Biden has appointed equal numbers of women (now at 48%) to the Cabinet – for the first time in U.S. history; the House of Representatives is led by a feminist woman, Speaker Nancy Pelosi; and feminists chair some of the most powerful committees including Rep. Maxine Waters of the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Rosa DeLauro of the Appropriations Committee and Rep. Carolyn Maloney of the Oversight and Reform Committee.
This is a moment that feminists—including our team here at Ms., as well as our long-time readers, who have been at the forefront of the feminist movement for decades—have been working towards. Now, we have to make sure we continue our push for true gender equality.
This week on MsMagazine.com, we featured some must-reads celebrating the glass ceiling-shattering, history-making week we just had, as well as a number of wonderful pieces outlining where we go from here. I hope you’ll give them a read below.
Let’s use this excitement to fuel our continuing work—and how about starting with the final fight for the Equal Rights Amendment? The end of our decades long battle for equality is in sight—read about the final push for the ERA below.
For equality,
