** Biden Administration Update:
------------------------------------------------------------
The new administration has promised to overturn all of the policies the Trump administration created to harm and deter migrants from coming to the US. One of those was the Migrant Protection Protocols (also known as Return to Mexico).

Today MPP is officially stopped! No additional migrants will be sent back to Mexico to wait for their court hearings. This is a step in the right direction, and we should celebrate to the fullest!

As immigration advocates, we work with our partners to hold the government accountable. Through the Defend Asylum campaign we join advocates along the US-Mexico border to continue to push for just and human policies, as well as more oversight.

We’re counting the time it takes to eliminate:
-MPP (we’ll be making sure it actually happens!)
-The asylum wait list (or metering system)
-Expulsions under Title 42
-Asylum Cooperative Agreements

DAY 1
The Biden-Harris Administration has yet to fully eliminate MPP

The Biden-Harris Administration has announced suspension of new enrollments into MPP (Remain in Mexico) as of January 21st. However, fully ending MPP means allowing the tens of thousands of asylum seekers affected by the policy to join their families & communities in the US, in safety and in freedom.

Day 2

The Biden Harris administration has yet to eliminate all Asylum cooperative agreements (ACAs)

** Water Drop
------------------------------------------------------------
We ended 2020 with our team completing our 43rd, and last, Water Drop of the year. That's 19 MORE than past years! It is a record for us!

YOU are the reason we had this success.

When the pandemic started, due to safety concerns, we had to stop taking out large groups of volunteers. Our team stepped up. We were out in the mountains and desert almost every weekend.

Having drops every weekend has helped us follow the changing migration patterns closely. It also allowed us to document the border wall construction.

2020 had its series of ups and downs while we were out in the mountains and desert, but one thing we were our most effective this year. The routes that we are able to track while we're out there show us very clearly that there will continue being a need for water drops this year. We'll continue to be out in the desert as much as we can.

Thank you everyone for reaching out about volunteering and for your support. As soon as it’s safe for us to start taking larger groups, we will. Follow our social media accounts and our weekly newsletter to receive any updates on volunteers.

For any questions about Water Drops reach out to our Program Co-Director James Cordero at [email protected]

** Familias Reunidas
Bond Program

The Familias Reunidas Immigration Bond Fund posted its first bond on January 7, 2020. Since then, we have helped free 69 immigrants and asylum seekers from the Otay Mesa, Adelanto and Imperial County for-profit immigration prisons. Because of you, this program has helped dozens of people from over 18 countries of origin.

Here is this short piece of art that was created to continue raising awareness of the complex immigration system that disproportionately affects migrants of color, and from which private corporations profit from.

Every donation helps mothers, fathers and loved ones who are still detained and every dollar goes towards freeing someone from detention.

Border Angels pledges to end family separation one family at a time – will you?

Thank you to the three artists, Aysia Segura, Gavin South, and Cristina Ibarrando, as well as professor Olivia Taussig-Moore and the Pratt Institute, who created this video. They made this all possible!

** President Biden's Immigration Plan Provides Pathway to Citizenship for Thousands of San Diego Dreamers
------------------------------------------------------------
Biden's immigration bill will include an expedited path to citizenship, allowing Dreamers, certain farm workers and immigrants under Temporary Protected Status to immediately be eligible for green cards and then citizenship within three years

By Melissa Adan

"President Joe Biden has unveiled the U.S. Citizenship Act which, if approved, will offer an eight-year road map to citizenship for the country's estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants, among other changes.

Biden also signed another order that will impact thousands of San Diegans -- the preservation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA.

"Once I saw the memo issued out and shared by the community, that's when I started to smile," said Dulce Garcia."

** Biden ready to release immigration bill after inauguration
------------------------------------------------------------

The measure will offer undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship.

By Sabrina Rodriguez

"President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday will fulfill a promise to release a day one bill to overhaul the U.S. immigration system that offers undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship, expands use of technology at the southern border instead of relying on a wall, and provides foreign aid to Central America.

Biden’s expansive proposal — detailed by incoming White House officials on a Monday evening call — will be sent to Congress and has already been regarded by several Democrats, immigrant advocates and migration experts as an ambitious marker bill for his immigration agenda. The incoming president is also expected to issue a series of immigration-related executive actions on Wednesday and in the coming days."

** Asylum Seekers Urge Biden To Honor Vow To Rescind Trump’s ‘Remain In Mexico’ Rule In ‘Open Letter’
------------------------------------------------------------
By Chantal Da Silva

"On the eve of Joe Biden’s inauguration, asylum seekers sought to remind the incoming president of one of his key immigration campaign promises to overturn a controversial rule introduced under the Trump administration that has brought them months of suffering.

In a video “open letter” released on Tuesday, asylum seekers congratulated the incoming president on his 2020 election victory, asserting: "We feel confident that in your new administration, many of the proposals you've made during your campaign with regards to the defense of immigrants will be implemented as quickly as possible.”

“We would like to let you know that there are thousands of families in danger and who have been waiting for over a year on the border for a positive outcome in their asylum competitions,” they say, in the video, which will be sent to the Biden administration after it comes into power on Wednesday."

[link removed]

"In other immigration news, asylum seekers on the southern border, in Mexico, released a video asking the Biden-Harris administration to take immediate action to end Trump’s destructive policies and enact more humane procedures.

Asylum seeker 1: “Immediately eliminate the separation of migrant families and take immediate action to reunify all of these families.”

Asylum seeker 2: “Guarantee legal representation for asylum seekers.”

Asylum seeker 3: “Guarantee the right to seek asylum, especially for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, unaccompanied minors, members of the LGBTQI community and Black asylum seekers.”"
