Decade-low 227 state legislative incumbents defeated on Nov. 3
Following the November election, 227 state legislative incumbents were defeated, the lowest number in the past decade. By party, those defeated incumbents include 165 Democrats, 52 Republicans, and 10 independents and members of a third party.
A look at judicial vacancies and appointments under Trump
This week, we wrapped up numbers on the federal judges who were nominated and confirmed under the Trump administration. At the time of Trump’s inauguration, there were 108 lifetime federal judicial vacancies, the largest number of vacancies at the beginning of a presidency since 1992.
Five states swore in newly elected officials this week
Alabama State Board of Education and court members, the West Virginia governor, the Delaware governor and lieutenant governor, the New Mexico Legislature, and Pennsylvania state executives were all sworn in this week.
Biden inaugurated as 46th president
President Joe Biden (D) was inaugurated as the nation’s 46th president. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) was also sworn in as the 49th vice president of the United States, becoming the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to serve in the office.
