Hey friend --

I look to the future with hope renewed by the inauguration of not only the first Black, Southeast Asian, and female vice president in Kamala Harris, but also a leader who once again speaks with empathy and of unity in Joe Biden.

It’s fitting that their inauguration fell on the one-year anniversary of the first case of COVID-19 in the United States, punctuating sharply just how much work there still is to do to ensure the health and safety of all Americans.

As we welcome in a new administration, we must acknowledge another milestone: 400,000 deaths [[link removed]] in the U.S. due to COVID-19.

To put that in perspective: that’s about as many deaths as people who live in New Orleans, LA. Or Tulsa, OK. Or Tampa, FL.

As distribution of vaccines ramps up, Congress has yet to pass further relief legislation and cases are surging like never before across the U.S.

We just swore in a new administration. Now it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Here are some actions you can take if you're ready to get involved in the fight ahead to make sure we can combat this deadly virus and its lasting impact:

→ As case numbers rise across the country, Los Angeles is experiencing unprecedented numbers, with one person contracting COVID-19 every six seconds. Read stories from those inside the most affected hospital in LA to understand why it’s so key that we get the pandemic under control: [[link removed]]

→ Many teachers are being forced back into classrooms in 2021 despite a rise in cases. Hear what teaching is like during a pandemic from teachers on the frontlines: [[link removed]]

→ The outbreak of COVID-19 affects almost every American -- all of us have stories. People in my own family have gotten the virus. If you have a story to share, we’d love to hear from you as well: Send me an email to add your voice: [[email protected]]

We’ll be back soon with more ways to fight for an equitable future for all people.

In solidarity --
