Inauguration and Latest Updates
This week's inauguration reminded us of the power of American democracy, as Joe Biden was sworn in as our 46th President of the United States and Kamala Harris broke numerous historic barriers being sworn in as Vice President. Ahead of Wednesday’s inauguration of President Biden, the streets of Washington D.C. and state capitols were heavily fortified. Armed protesters surfaced outside government buildings in many states, including Texas, Michigan and Oregon.
Last weekend, VP of Center on Extremism, Oren Segal, was featured on 60 Minutes and our CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt spoke on PBS News Hour
to discuss this dangerous new phase of American extremism, marked by the emergence of a new breed of extremist that has been fed a steady diet of disinformation, lies and conspiracy theories.
We encourage you to watch these clips and to read our latest reports on the evolving situation. We also hope you will visit our Center on Extremism page frequently for the latest information and analysis.

Fighting Hate From Home Webinars
The world watched in horror as insurrectionists violently forced entry into the Capitol in Washington D.C. to intimidate legislators, and also rallied in cities across the country. ADL hosted a webinar, "The Clear and Present Danger of Mainstreaming Extremism," which brought together experts to explore how extremism is being stoked and is spilling from the fringes into the streets.
This week, ADL’s Fighting Hate from Home webinar was “Extremism and Political Violence in America: the Current Landscape, the Future Outlook.” Oren Segal, the VP of ADL’s Center on Extremism
and U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill analyzed the anger and vitriol we saw during the attack on the Capitol, what drove things to that boiling point, and what comes next as we face an extremist threat that appears to have significant staying power.

2020 Richmond Lobby Day: Blueprint for a Violent Year
One year before the January 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol building, more than 20,000 mostly armed people gathered 97 miles away outside the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond for the Virginia Citizen Defense League’s (VCDL) Lobby Day. The event, held on January 20, 2020, allowed protesters to express their anger over newly elected Virginia Democrats’ reported plans to pursue stricter gun control legislation. Celebrated at the time for being a peaceful event, one year later the 2020 Lobby Day is better understood as a harbinger of what was to come -- including the January 6, 2021 assault on the U.S. Capitol.
