Fellow Conservative,
I want to keep you updated about Congress’s efforts this week to undermine our border security.
Background: President Trump declared a national emergency on February 15 in order to secure additional funds for border security measures to meet the humanitarian and law enforcement crisis at our southern border. The President has clear legal authority to do so and has clearly followed the law by declaring a national emergency to protect our borders.
Yesterday, the Senate passed S. J. Res. 54 to terminate the national emergency declared by the President on February 15, 2019.
Tomorrow, the House will take up S. J. Res. 54 and will vote to terminate the national emergency at our border.
For years, Congress has failed to do its duty and secure our border. And now, after President Trump takes action to secure the border, Congress votes to undermine his efforts.
Furthermore, two bills are in the House this week that will restrict DHS operations.
- Yesterday, the House passed H.R. 2203 (sponsored by Rep. Veronica Escobar [D-TX-16])
- Today, the House will vote on H.R. 3525 (sponsored by Rep. Lauren Underwood [D-IL-14])
At a time when our border security forces are already beyond overwhelmed, these two bills would worsen and enshrine the very “catch and release” policies that have fueled the current border crisis.
