CHILDWATCH AVAILABLE AT ALL CHAPTER MEETINGS
Would you like to attend the
meeting with your little one(s) but maybe they can be a handful
sometimes, and it can be kind of hard to get as engaged as you’d like
to?
We offer ChildWatch, casual onsite
child care, with toys, and friendly comrades to play, and hang out
with kids, and stay in touch with their parents or guardians as they
attend the meeting around the corner, at all three of our chapter
branch meetings! RSVP HERE, and we’ll sort out the details!
NEW MEMBER MEET & GREETS
Will this next Chapter Meeting be
your first one? It’ll be a fun and busy one, with a lot of exciting
discussion. It’ll be great, but it could also be a lot to take in at
once, so, if you’d like, come to one of our New Member Meet &
Greets before the meeting!
The Meet & Greets start just
half an hour before the meeting does, at 2:30 in all of the branch
locations listed above. You’ll get to meet a friendly person from our
chapter who will say hi, can get you some info and printed matter on
the organization and our chapter, speak with you about your interests,
and help point you towards the work you’d like to get involved
with!

JOIN OUR EXPANDED CONFLICT RESOLUTION TEAM: DEADLINE
TONIGHT
Within our organization, we’re
deeply committed to building and maintaining structures that support
our members and ensure our spaces do not reproduce the systems of
oppression we collectively seek to dismantle.
Over the last month, the DSA-LA
Steering Committee has been working to recruit, interview, and train a
Conflict Resolution Team. Once in place, the Conflict Resolution Team
will play a critical role in providing members ongoing access
to:
- Appointments for informal, confidential peer support from
trained comrades;
- Clear
mechanisms to make formal reports of misconduct (including harassment)
to be investigated and mediated by external third parties;
- Opportunities to engage in educational forums on organizational
culture that enable all of us to examine and unlearn patterns of
behavior normalized under capitalist social relations.
It’s our collective responsibility
to ensure that our organizational spaces are safe and empowering, and
that our members have the support they need to engage in our
collective political struggle. To this end, the DSA-LA Steering
Committee has called for members to apply to join the DSA-LA Conflict
Resolution Team, to fulfill either the responsibilities of:
-
DSA-LA Ombudspeople as outlined in
Section B of the DSA-LA Misconduct Policy (ratified on November 2, 2017); or as
-
Local Harassment Grievance Officers,
outlined in Section 2(b) of Resolution 33 (passed at the DSA National Convention in
August 2017).
To learn more about the
responsibilities of the Ombudspeople, the Harassment Grievance
Officers, and the training, relevant skills, and eligibility for the
Conflict Resolution Team, click THIS LINK.

BRANCH COORDINATOR APPLICATIONS are ALSO DUE TONIGHT,
SUNDAY 7/14!
Branch Coordinator positions have
opened in all three branches. It's up to all of us to build up DSA-LA,
and to that end we are asking our members to consider supporting the
work of expanding and developing the structure of our organization by
applying to become an Interim Branch Coordinator - a position to be
appointed by the Steering Committee and then held until just after the
2019 DSA-LA Annual Convention in October.
The 2018 DSA-LA Annual Convention passed the
“Building DSA-LA Across All Los Angeles County” chapter
resolution, formally
establishing “branches” as a new entity within the chapter. Since
then, our chapter has established the Central, Westside, and San
Fernando Valley Branches to advance our collective goal of building an
independent, socialist political bloc that represents the full
diversity of LA County.
In practice, we have hosted branch
meetings, facilitated regional committee work, and organized
chapter-wide work in all three branches. A lot of this is possible
because of Branch Coordinators! They are responsible for ensuring that
branch meetings occur, facilitating relationship-building among branch
members, and engaging in geography-focused recruitment, among other
things.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: PASS SB 233!
Earlier this year, the DSA-LA
Prison Abolition Committee voted to endorse SB 233, a measure that
will prohibit the arrest of those in the sex trade who are attempting
to report violent crimes outlined in the bill, or who are simply in
possession of condoms.
Decriminalization bills such as SB
233 represent an important step towards the decriminalization of sex
work and towards ending mass incarceration. We are excited that last
week, SB 233 made it past the Senate floor and it is now heading to
the Governor’s desk.
This week, the Prison Abolition
Committee will be sending a new letter of support for SB 233 to the
Governor, urging him to sign the bill into law.
To learn more about the Prison
Abolition Committee’s ongoing work and projects, come to the next
meeting, tomorrow, this Monday, July 15th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at
Cafe Mak, 612 Shatto Pl., Los Angeles, CA 90005. RSVP
