Last week one of our former colleagues and correspondents – Andrei Aliaksandrau – was detained in Belarus. Our friend, colleague and human rights defender is now being arbitrarily held for defending the right to free expression. He is one of 187 political prisoners in Belarus right now - they are all real people with families and lives. Read what our CEO Ruth Smeeth has to say ([link removed]) on their detention.

In the latest episode ([link removed]) of our weekly What the Fuck!? podcast, we speak with the US Press Freedom Tracker's Kirstin McCudden.

McCudden talks about how attacks on journalists skyrocketed during the Black Lives Matter campaign, legitimised by the Trump presidency. She discusses the storming of the US Capitol and what it means to be a journalist in the USA right now.

The cookies we blindly accept on websites have the potential to curtail other rights, given that privacy is a gateway for other civil liberties, especially freedom of expression. The more people become aware of how much of their own data is being hoovered up, the more careful they feel like they have to be about what they do online.
