John – right now Yasaman and her mother, Monireh, are in jail.

They’ve been sentenced to 16 years in prison each for peacefully protesting Iran’s laws forcing women to wear the veil.

Deciding whether to wear a veil should be an individual choice- not a criminal offence.

Earlier this year, a video went viral of Monireh and Yasaman unveiled and handing out flowers to female passengers on a train in Tehran.

For this, they were arrested and charged with ‘inciting prostitution.’ They’ve since faced intense interrogation, solitary confinement and abuse.

During their trial they had no access to lawyers and were reportedly verbally abused and threatened by the judge.
