Dear John,
As a committed defender of the Wilderness, you might already be familiar with Kids For the Boundary Waters. This entirely youth-led effort was created to raise and mobilize a generation of young Wilderness Warriors who are passionate about the fight to protect the Boundary Waters from sulfide-ore copper mines proposed within its watershed. Read the story of one of these passionate young wilderness protectors below.
My name is Lily Pearson. My involvement with the Boundary Waters started at a young age. My family had a cabin on the Canadian side of the Wilderness and we would frequently visit when I was a kid. However, when I was three years old I was in a plane crash that killed my mother and the pilot while leaving my sister and I badly burned and with broken bones. Luckily, we were taken to the right hospitals and received outstanding medical attention. We recovered physically, but our emotional recovery was a different story.
We were taken care of at Regions Hospital and about a year after we were discharged, they contacted my dad asking if our family wanted to go to Y.M.C.A. Camp Du Nord. The hospital was planning on taking other families with burn survivors to the camp to spend time with each other. The idea was to connect and bond with families like ours. The pristine waters, clean air and beautiful woods taught me that although there is hatred and pain and suffering in the world, there is still beauty. There is still love and still hope.
Spending that week in the Boundary Waters was my first step towards emotional recovery and without it, I have no idea who I would be today. I have now spent many weeks at Camp Du Nord and in the Boundary Waters. Each time I return there I am reminded of the tranquility nature brings to this world and find solace in its unmatched beauty. It is important to me and many others that we protect this wilderness area for many generations to come.
Please join me and Kids for the Boundary Waters in fighting for the future of this special place by making a gift today.
Lily Pearson
