PAC Awards of Excellence Program Call for Nominations — 2021
Parademic Association of Canada
The Paramedic Association of Canada has developed an awards program to recognize exceptional Canadian paramedics and paramedic supporters at the national level. Due to COVID-19, the award presentation will likely occur in the recipient’s home province, with a goal to be publicly awarded at the next Paramedics Across Canada Expo when it is safe to do so.

New protective gear for Northumberland Paramedics

Some paramedics in Northumberland will have a unique look as they continue to deal with calls in the community in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting this week Northumberland Paramedics will have access to Powered Air Purified Respirators when they respond to 911 calls, which are essentially enclosed helmets with clear visors in the front, that help to limit airborne particles with the use of a built-in HEPA filter.

BCEHS: B.C. paramedics responded to record average of 74 overdose calls a day in 2020

Paramedics across B.C. responded to more calls to help someone who had an overdose in 2020 than any other year since record keeping began, according to dispatchers. B.C. Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) recently said they were called to 27,067 overdoses last year — an average of 74 calls every day, or one call around every 20 minutes. The total is up 12 per cent from 2019, according to a statement.

Sudbury paramedics are monitoring the vitals of residents with COVID-19 at Amberwood Suites, through what is called remote clinical monitoring. The person with the virus can take their own vital signs, such as blood pressure, temperature and heart rate and the information goes directly to the paramedics. The paramedics then keep an eye on the information and will determine if the retirement home resident needs a wellness check.

Paramedics asking for patience as pandemic heightens stress levels

Guelph-Wellington paramedics are reminding the public they're "just here to help" as they say stress levels for them and others have been much higher during the pandemic. Primary care paramedics like Breanna Cunnigham and Erin Miehe are relatively new to the job in comparison to others, with Cunningham having started two and a half years ago and Miehe hit the road for the first time in June.

B.C.'s rapid response paramedics deployed to Williams Lake as COVID-19 cases climb

This time the specialized team is heading to Williams Lake where there are large levels of COVID-19 patients in multiple clusters in the region and an outbreak at the hospital responsible for treating them.

OPP: Fergus woman charged after paramedic was assaulted in an ambulance

Wellington County OPP say a 63-year-old woman has been charged after a paramedic was assaulted in the back of an ambulance in Fergus, Ont., on Boxing Day. An ambulance was responding to a call for service on Gordon Street at around 4:00 p.m. Police said while in the back of the ambulance, the woman became combative and assaulted one of the paramedics.

2020 was busiest year ever for paramedic calls in Thompson

The overall number of calls that Thompson Fire & Emergency Services (TFES) responded to in 2020 was up marginally from the previous year, thanks mainly to a four per cent increase in emergency medical services (EMS) calls. "We had 6,881 EMS calls last year compared to 6,616 in 2019,” TFES Chief Selby Brown told Thompson’s recreation and community services committee at their recent meeting.

Ambulance call leads to weapons charges in Keewatin

Members of the Kenora OPP the Kenora Community Street Crime Unit and the Organized Crime and Enforcement Bureau have charged a Kenora man with weapons related charges stemming from an investigation. On Jan. 7, around 3:00 p.m., police responded to an ambulance assist call on Tenth Street in Keewatin. While at the home, a firearm was seized and the OPP later conducted a search warrant on the residence.

Improved ambulance service part of Cornwall/SDG Shared Services budget increase

Looking to improve land-ambulance services in SDG Counties, Cornwall and SDG paramedics have budgeted a 7.51 per cent increase in operating and capital spending for 2021. Chief Bill Lister presented the paramedic services budget to SDG Counties council at its regular meeting as part of the overall Shared Services presentation. SDG and Cornwall have a shared-services agreement, which was renewed late Fall 2020.
