Dear John,
On President Biden's first day, he called on every American to come together to solve the enormous challenges we face -- and I agree with him.
But, John, unity cannot mean letting the instigators of an attempted coup off the hook.
If those who organize and incited the attacks on January 6 are not held accountable, it will be a green light to the insurrectionists to try again.
And if the Senate fails to convict Donald Trump, he could run for president again in 2024 -- and it would send a message to future outgoing presidents that they can try to stay in power by inciting violence in the waning days of their presidency.
We cannot let that happen. Will you make a donation and help support our work, including demanding accountability for Donald Trump and the members of Congress who incited or allegedly planned the January 6 insurrection? [[link removed]]
President Biden accomplished so much on his first day in office: ending Trump's Muslim travel ban, halting the construction of Trump's border wall, rejoining the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Accord, freezing evictions and student loans to help Americans crushed by the COVID-19 recession, and more.
But as we work to undo Trump's cruelty, repair our tattered democracy, and build a better nation, we cannot allow calls for "unity" to be used to excuse the violent attack on January 6 that aimed to overthrow the U.S. government and left five dead.
"Unity" means Reps. Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, and Mo Brooks -- the three members of Congress who allegedly helped plan the insurrection -- must resign or be expelled from Congress if it turns out they did.
"Unity" means Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, who led the efforts to throw out Biden electoral votes and overturn the election on the basis of Trump's lies, cannot remain in office or be rewarded by running for president in four years with the support of Trump's base and Fox News.
Holding these members of Congress accountable, and convicting Trump for inciting an insurrection, is not a "distraction" from Biden's agenda. It is an essential step to reestablishing respect for the Constitution and our democracy, which must be a core part of Biden's agenda.
We came close to tyranny. We're not yet free of the threat. We have a reprieve. We must use it to rebuild trust, strengthen democracy, fight racism, create good jobs -- hold those who attacked our democracy accountable. It may be our last chance.
We're demanding accountability for the January 6 insurrection. Will you stand with us and make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action today? [[link removed]]
