Dear John,

Next week the Florida Senate Government Accountability Committee is taking up SB 78. This bill is based upon a sample bill created by Betsy DeVos’ Mackinac Center – so right away you know it can’t be good. That’s why we need your help to tell members of the committee thanks, but no thanks! [link removed]

This is a big government bill that limits the individual freedoms of many frontline workers, including educators. It requires you to jump through hoops to join and remain a member. Joining an employee organization is a personal decision, but lawmakers don’t trust that you can make that decision on your own. The last thing we need is more regulations and big government overseeing our personal decisions.

The bill places an undue burden on the employer as well as the employee. Once the employer receives a signed dues authorization, the employer must “confirm with the employee, electronically or by other means, that he or she authorized the deduction of dues and uniform assessments.” This puts the employer in charge of the dues authorization process for the first time in history.

The bottom line: SB 78 is unnecessary. Florida is a right to work state. Workers NEVER have to join their union. It is their choice whether and when to join. And they can cancel their membership at any time for any reason.

Please help us send a strong message to legislators that we don’t need unnecessary regulations that impede our freedom to be a member of a union.

In Solidarity,
