Dear John,
Though the calendar has flipped, the world continues to grapple with many of the challenges of the past year. The pandemic and its economic fallout continue to devastate lives, and are taking place against the backdrop of the racial justice and mounting climate crises. With the turning of the calendar year, we are faced with the question: What does 2021 hold for the world?
Last week, WRI President and CEO Andrew Steer hosted our 18th annual Stories to Watch. The event, which for the first time was fully virtual, outlined the key moments, trends, and people that will shape the year ahead.
Andrew flagged seven critical stories, such as how the world will reset after the pandemic, what’s the role of nature-based solutions, reimagining cities, and more. He noted that “by the end of this year, we will know what kind of civilization we really are.”
On the Stories to Watch event page, you can dig more into these stories, including whether 2021 will be an inflection point for global climate action. The Biden-Harris administration is now in power, bringing hope for a stepped-up response, including prioritizing the climate crisis. There is much work to be done.
The issues in Stories to Watch are at the core of our mission. We need your support to help us respond to these crises and get the world on a more sustainable path this year. Please support our work and mission by donating today.
We are determined that the recovery from this convergence of crises will ultimately improve people’s lives and ensure nature can thrive. Thank you for being a part of WRI’s community and caring about these issues as much as we do.
Warm regards,
Michael Oko
Global Communications Director
