John,
Now that President Biden has taken the oath of office, it’s time for Congress to take a hard look at his cabinet nominations to ensure that they are best equipped to lead our country –– and I’d like your input on one nominee in particular.
Retired Army General Lloyd Austin was tapped to lead the Pentagon despite the law stating that recently retired generals should not serve in that political role which was created for civilians.
That’s why today, Congress will vote on whether or not to exempt him from that legal guardrail, and I plan to vote ”no.” I encourage you to read my op-ed in the Wall Street Journal to learn more.
While I respect and admire Gen. Austin’s record of service in uniform, I believe that it’s in the best interest for our future national security and strength to keep politics out of the military and vice versa.
But before I cast my vote on behalf of Northeast Wisconsin, I’d like to know where you stand on this crucial issue, John. Should Congress Exempt General Lloyd Austin No matter who ends up serving as our nation’s defense secretary, they will be faced with immense and historic challenges starting on day one –– from the budget front here at home to the geopolitical front abroad with China and Russia becoming increasingly more aggressive.
This is a decision that we cannot afford to get wrong, and that’s why I’m asking for your feedback today on our survey, John.
Thank you, Mike Gallagher
