friend, Today is the 11th anniversary of Citizens United, a Supreme Court decision that essentially provided corporations and the ultra-wealthy with the ability to manipulate and corrupt US elections, while undermining our democracy. In the past 11 years we have seen the impact of this ruling from a reality TV show president to 13 Senators who paved the way for insurrection both inside and outside Capitol Hill. We’ve released a statement on today’s anniversary, remarking on the harm Citizens United has caused, but also describing how we can repair and move forward in the name of the common good. And we see some hope. We applaud today’s announcement of a bipartisan constitutional amendment that overturns Citizens United. U.S. Reps. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and John Katko (R-N.Y.) reintroduced the Democracy for All Amendment, a bipartisan constitutional amendment that affirms the right of states and the federal government to pass laws that regulate spending in elections. UnKoch My Campus supports the Democracy for All Amendment as a first step toward righting the wrong of Citizens United. But there is still much more to do before we get to a place where we put people over corporate need and greed. Jasmine Banks, Executive Director UnKoch My Campus |
