The last four years have been virtually unbearable with constant attacks on the American people, our democracy and our government institutions. But now we have a new administration, elected with a mandate to invest in our country’s future ― paid for by rolling back the big parts of Trump’s $2 trillion tax scam benefiting corporations and the wealthy.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris ran on a platform to undo the Trump-GOP tax scam and close other tax breaks benefiting the rich and corporations ― and use those funds to invest in COVID relief, healthcare, education, housing, infrastructure, the environment and more, so we can build an inclusive economy that works for all of us.
And, even with Democrats in control of both chambers of Congress, progress will not come easily.
In 2017, 7,000 high priced corporate lobbyists ― some of whom were former members of Congress and staff themselves ― carved out massive tax breaks for the rich and corporations in Trump’s tax scam.[1] Americans for Tax Fairness led the opposition, and while Congress passed their disgusting tax law, we won the debate in the eyes of the American people, resulting in a GOP thumping at the ballot box in 2018.
Now, on the heels of the 2020 election that was not only a referendum on Trump, but also on his disastrous policies, it’s up to us to remind Congress that they were elected to deliver on an agenda of public investment and tax fairness ― particularly in the face of a pandemic that is ravaging our country.
