Friend, yesterday marked the end of Donald Trump’s presidency -- and I want you to know that Common Cause has prioritized repairing the damage he has done to our democracy.
And, there is major legislation just re-introduced, the For the People Act, that would go a long way towards doing just that.
Stopping Big Money from calling the shots in our politics. Ending partisan gerrymandering. Expanding our right to vote. Holding elected officials (including the president) to high ethical standards.
The For the People Act would make urgently needed progress on all of these priorities -- which is why your lawmakers need to hear from you right now >>
To reflect the urgency of this moment, House and Senate leaders have designated the For the People Act as H.R. 1 / S. 1 -- a first priority for the new Congress.
We have a real chance to get this bill on President Biden’s desk for his signature -- and if we do, it would absolutely transform our democracy for the better.
We already know the solutions that work. Letting independent redistricting commissions draw electoral maps checks the power of self-interested politicians. Small-donor, citizen-funded elections, which more than two-dozen states and localities have enacted, are proven to allow ordinary people to run for office, while helping ensure elected officials stay accountable to the public interest.
We must make sure that these vital reforms are included and stay in this bill. Can you write to your lawmakers and urge them to support a strong For the People Act today?
This is the best chance we have had in years to make real, tangible progress at the federal level to strengthen our democracy. The reforms contained in this bill would go a long way toward making our democracy more inclusive, responsive, and accountable to the people.
I hope we can count on your action today.
Thanks for all you do,
Aaron Scherb, Director of Legislative Affairs
