John,
Here’s some good news: Yesterday, Social Security Administration Deputy Commissioner Mark Warshawsky resigned. Warshawsky was the mastermind behind regulations making it more difficult to qualify for and stay on some Social Security benefits.
Social Security Works has been pushing President Biden to clean house in the Social Security Administration, and this is a good start.
But Commissioner Andrew Saul and Deputy Commissioner David Black remain at SSA, ready to execute Donald Trump’s policy vision for our Social Security system under the Biden administration. President Biden designated Commissioner Saul as Acting Commissioner yesterday, saying Saul is among those who “will temporarily lead federal agencies while Cabinet nominees continue moving through the confirmation process.”[1]
Our pressure is working! But we can’t let up. Chip in $7 to our Clean House at SSA Campaign today!
Biden must act swiftly to replace Saul and Black with a new Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner who believe in our Social Security system. The scary fact is that only 8 of the last 40 years have had a Senate-confirmed SSA Commissioner who was appointed by a Democratic President. Barack Obama didn’t prioritize SSA leadership, and Republicans seized on that to undermine the program throughout his presidency.
Every day that Saul and Black remain at the helm of the Social Security Administration means more time to put regulations and bureaucracy between you and your earned benefits. It means the annual earnings statements will continue to contain language that undermines public faith in the program. And it means that our Social Security system is in danger.
Our Clean House campaign is working―help us keep pushing until we have a Social Security Administration that works for all Americans! Chip in $7 today!
The only thing that is acceptable at the Social Security Administration is a new commissioner and a new deputy commissioner who believe in the system. The American people won't accept anything less.
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
