Dear Friend,

Yesterday’s inauguration was a historic day as our nation marked a transition to a new President. It was particularly important for LGBTQ young people to witness, as President Biden issued a number of day-one executive orders, including one to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination.

Data from our 2020 National Survey shows that a third of employed LGBTQ youth and young adults report experiencing LGBTQ-based discrimination in the workplace — and they were twice as likely to have attempted suicide in the past year compared to those who did not. This executive order, a critical first step in the Biden administration’s commitment to protecting the LGBTQ community, will help save young LGBTQ lives.

No matter what is happening in Washington, D.C., The Trevor Project will continue to be there to support LGBTQ young people. We will always share a clear message that they are beautiful the way they are, they’re deserving of love and respect, and they are never alone – through this administration and many more to come.

We’re already working directly with policymakers from the new administration to advocate for LGBTQ youth and protect their futures. We’ll also continue to work closely with legislators in every state and from every political party to support the LGBTQ youth we serve. As part of The Trevor Project’s valued community of supporters, we wanted to share just a few of our priorities with you:

  • Support federal, state, and municipal legislation to protect youth from conversion therapy

  • Educate lawmakers and the public about the harms and dangers of conversion therapy
  • Include suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention training in school policies

  • Educate lawmakers and communities about the lack of suicide prevention efforts in their schools
  • Protect trans and nonbinary youth from discriminatory bills introduced this winter in states around the country

  • Educate lawmakers and communities about the threat these anti-trans bills cause to the physical and mental health of young people

Thank you for your commitment to LGBTQ young people — we could not advocate and be there for them without your continued support.
