Dear friend,
We have a new president — and I hope soon we will have a new clemency process.
On his last full day in office, President Trump granted 144 pardons and commutations. I was happy to see commutations awarded to people profiled by FAMM, including Chris Young (featured in our documentary, "The Vanishing Trial"), John Knock, and Jodi Richter. We are happy for them and the many others who deserved and received clemency and pardons.
But we need to be honest: The process stinks. Too many people need to know a celebrity or hire a well-connected lobbyist to get their petition for clemency heard. This sort of favoritism only increases cynicism about the criminal justice system.
President Biden has said he is committed to using his clemency authority more frequently. We will hold him to that. We also will urge him to make the process fairer so that people don’t need a big Rolodex or bank account to have a chance at mercy or overdue justice.
FAMM is also fighting for clemency at the state level. Governors should use their authority to reconsider extreme sentences. You can learn more about our current campaigns at our action center: famm.org/actioncenter [[link removed]]
We need to stop throwing so many people away and start giving more second chances.
Best,
Kevin Ring
