Dear John:

Rich westerners want Africans to follow them into the abyss of the sexual revolution. They are targeting Africans for contraception, abortion, radical sexual education and much else. Explore this with two experts including a Bishop from Kenya who is on the front lines of this battle for African families.

Sub-Saharan Africa has become a key battleground for the abortion debate that continues within international institutions. Many countries in the region, with the notable exception of South Africa, have pro-life laws that prohibit or strongly restrict abortion, and the practice continues to be viewed negatively within the broader culture of many African countries, which celebrate large families.

Kenya is in the top ten most populous countries in Africa, as well as one of the wealthiest, and it therefore has an influential role, in the East African region in particular. While it is far from being the only country targeted by reproductive rights groups seeking to change its abortion laws, it is an informative example of how this process is being done in many countries in Africa, as well as elsewhere in the world.

At the London Summit on Family Planning in 2012, the Gates Foundation made family planning one of its signature issues, using the slogan “No Controversy” to insist that contraception should not be politically divisive, and should be seen as separate from the highly controversial issue of abortion. Almost a decade later, looking at the partnerships supported by the Gates Foundation and their near-unanimous support for abortion, we examine the stark distinction between the desire to avoid the controversy associated with abortion and the commitment to avoid complicity in it.
