Friend,
I'm humbled to be writing to you. Yesterday, I was sworn in as a U.S. senator from the great state of Georgia - and the first Black senator in my home state's history.
I'm humbled for many reasons, just a few of which I'll share with you. To begin, not many kids growing up in a housing project with 11 brothers and sisters picture themselves being sworn in to the Senate. Once I'd dared to dream that big, the pundits told us this race was unwinnable. And even in the runoff, the polls were never 100% in our favor.
But the people have spoken - and now we're here.
This movement fought in the tradition of so many before us: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis and thousands of Georgians whose names are less known but whose passion guides us every day. And together, we proved that with hope, hard work and the people by our side, anything is possible.
My hand may have been the one on the Bible, but everyone who touched this campaign was right there with me.
I am so proud of everyone who volunteered to call voters or send postcards. I am so proud of everyone who dug deep and contributed what they could. I am so proud of the people who registered to vote in this election because they knew the stakes were sky-high - and that our potential stretched even higher.
And I'm grateful. For your prayers and your passion. For your votes. For the way I know you'll hold me accountable in Washington. Because we have some work to do, don't we?
I know that we can beat the pandemic with science and good old-fashioned common sense. That we can rebuild a fairer economy that provides essential workers an essential wage and essential benefits. That we can ensure people have access to affordable health care.
When we won this election, I said that it was dark in this country, but Scripture tells us that "joy comes in the morning." Let my first words as your senator be a bright and hopeful "good morning" - we made it to the dawn, and the future can only get brighter as we face it together.
Thank you again. I hope and expect to stay in touch with you as I serve Georgia. May God bless our state, and all of these United States.
Sincerely,
Senator Warnock
