In fact, one in six youth ages 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year, according to an article in JAMA Pediatrics. As we turn the calendar to October, we want to draw attention to Mental Illness Awareness Week, Oct. 6-12. NASN serves as a member of a development workgroup focused on refining an intervention for school nurses to use to reduce student anxiety called CALM – Child Anxiety Learning Modules. This work is being lead by the University of Connecticut Health Center and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and funded by the Department of Education’s Institute of Educational Sciences. As school nurses, we serve as a member of the interprofessional student support team, and must assess the impact of students' physical and mental health needs on learning and school participation. The study examines the extent to which the Chicago Parent Program (CPP) could be implemented with fidelity in 12 urban schools, serving a large population of young children living in poverty. TAKE THE SURVEY Managing Chronic Health Conditions CDC Tool to Improve Asthma Control The CDC EXHALE technical package includes strategies which, based on the best available evidence, can improve asthma control and reduce health care costs. E=education on asthma self-management; X=extinguish smoking and second-hand smoke; H=home visits for trigger reduction and asthma education; A=achievement of guidelines-based medical management; L=linkages and coordination across settings; E=environmental policies or best practices to reduce asthma triggers from indoor, outdoor, and occupational sources. Improving School Community & Student Health Social Security Number No Longer Needed for VSP Eyes of Hope Effective immediately, a Social Security number is no longer required to use a VSP Eyes of Hope® gift certificate. This will simplify and increase access to vision care for students in need. The VSP Eyes of Hope gift certificates have been redesigned to reflect this change. Gift certificates will now include a pre-populated Patient ID that VSP network doctors will use to process claims; the partner instructions on the front have been updated accordingly and should be reviewed before distributing each gift certificate. If you possess the old gift certificate design that includes the SSN field, those may be used until they expire. Your members can call VSP at 1.800.877.7195 before distributing to receive a unique Patient ID to transcribe into the SSN field for recipients who do not have or do not want to share a SSN.
