We are all breathing a sigh of relief that the Trump era is finally over. But it doesn't mean we can let up on our work -- far from it. We have so much to do to reverse the damage of the Trump years and plot a course toward a more equitable future.

As we write this, lawmakers in states across the country are starting to think about what the next decade's worth of maps will look like. The efforts of the NDRC and our affiliates will determine whether those maps are fair or whether they are skewed in favor of Republicans once again. And that will determine how much progress we can make in the next 10 years.

Our work doesn't end there. Two weeks after the failed coup at the U.S. Capitol, it's more urgent than ever that we institute every piece of a democracy reform agenda. That means ending gerrymandering, it means ensuring access to the ballot box (including vote by mail), it means electing the president by popular vote, and it means passing federal legislation like H.R. 1 and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
None of this will be easy, but now is our best chance if we can take advantage of popular support.
