John,

After four years of turmoil, chaos and corruption, I was honored to attend today’s swearing-in of Joseph R. Biden Jr. as the 46th President of the United States. Today marks the end of the disastrous Trump presidency, and the beginning of a new and more hopeful chapter for our nation.

We’ve spent so much time, energy and political capital these past four years trying to prevent Donald Trump and his cronies from destroying the fabric of our country. In the weeks after the election, they directly and violently attacked democracy and threatened the continued existence of our democratic republic.

We persisted, and thankfully we prevailed.

We now have a huge amount of work to do. But with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in office and a Democratic majority controlling the Senate and the House, I know we will bring clarity, accountability and competency to the imperative of defeating the COVID pandemic and rebuilding our broken economy; we will work to heal this divided nation, restore confidence in our institutions, and tackle the climate crisis with the urgency it requires. We will value facts, science, and decency.

The divisive, grievance politics of Trumpism will not just disappear. While I believe the worst of that fever has broken, some Republicans will fight to keep it going. Others — lawmakers and most of their constituents — will want to move on and unite with Democrats to address the serious problems we face.

The opportunity to move forward in a better direction is what we worked so hard for. With new leaders and a new resolve, we begin that journey today.

I’ve shared many of my priorities for the coming year. I would love to hear yours. Please take a moment to reply to this email with your thoughts about what we should work to accomplish in the coming year.

All the best,

Jared
