John —

Today, I am wearing Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm's pearls. Her memory is with me everyday, but I know she is especially smiling bright and shining down on this historic Inauguration Day.

Her fearlessness and determination to make our country better set the precedent for Black women to aspire to positions of power.

Because of Shirley, I am . Because of her, Kamala is . And while Kamala is the first Black and AAPI woman Vice President — she will not be the last.

This day is a monumental moment in history we should undoubtedly celebrate. We witnessed Republicans and white supremacists try to break our democracy, but they failed.

Our democracy, as fragile and vulnerable as it is, prevailed. And it’s because of you.

The events of the last year, and the last two weeks, have been trying. But we made it through, together. Now, this is our moment to take pride in our accomplishments as we welcome President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and our new Democratic Senate majority.

In the spirit of Shirley Chisholm, John Lewis, and Maya Angelou — we will remain unbought and unbossed, we will get into good trouble ushering along progress, and through every attack that comes our way — we. will. rise.

Today we celebrate. Because we fought for this moment. Because hope is alive. Tomorrow, we get back to work.

I couldn’t be more grateful to have you standing by my side as we build a better, brighter, just America for all.

In solidarity,

Barbara Lee
