Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have officially been sworn in as President and Vice President of the United States. Today marks a historic, critical transition from an administration defined by cruelty, corruption, and callousness to one of empathy, compassion, and grace.
I look forward to working with Joe and Kamala — and with the organizers, advocates, and community builders who helped deliver them to the White House — to advance bold, progressive policies that meet the scale and scope of the crises we face.
As we give ourselves permission to be joyful and celebrate this extraordinary moment in history, we must also remain clear-eyed about the work that lies ahead.
If our country is to begin on a path toward an equitable, just recovery, undo the unmitigated harm of the last four years and upend the institutions of white supremacy that brought us to this moment, we must commit ourselves to the deep, systemic work that will require a radical restructuring of the architecture of American society.
I have already called on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to use their power to abolish the death penalty, cancel student debt, and more.
As inaugural poet Amanda Gorman said at the conclusion of her poem, “The Hill We Climb,” “There is always light/if only we're brave enough to see it/if only we're brave enough to be it.”
