John, it is okay to cry.
Today is a momentous day because for the first time ever, and definitely
not the last, a woman is America’s Vice President.
Not just any woman, Kamala Harris was sworn in just moments ago. This is
her victory.
This is our victory too. That a daughter of two immigrants, a
first-generation American, can become the first female Vice President of
the United States of America shows just how far we have come.
This is a major turning point in American history that will inspire
countless generations of women.
Think of all the little girls and boys who will grow up only knowing an
America where it’s possible for a woman of color to be Vice President.
Their only memories will be of a time when women can occupy the highest
offices in the land and as a father of young children myself, I know just
how impactful this will be.
The reality that today will stand in history as the first day of our first
female Vice President of the United States, and that she also identifies
as Black and South Asian, must be celebrated as a huge step forward for
equality from the steps of the Capitol to the center of our hearts.

women who will come after her.
