| | | Wednesday, January 20 Round Up: We find hope in America's future, what the Governor's budget means for California housing, host the future of affordable housing, and more! |
| | Today is the Presidential and Vice Presidential Inauguration and the start of a new era of democracy. As we find ourselves at this critical moment, what we say and do is more important than ever. We can collectively begin to turn the tide on this chapter in our nation’s history by firmly condemning all forms of racism and hate, and staunchly advocating for democracy, equity, fairness, anti-racism, inclusion, and justice. NPH will continue to work tirelessly to effect the changes that we’ve needed for so long. Now, our lawmakers and the public may actually have the political will and pressure to achieve them. |

| | NPH's Analysis of the Governor's Budget Proposal | | |
| |
|
| Earlier this month, Governor Gavin Newsom released his proposed budget for California’s 2021-22 fiscal year. The Governor’s proposal demonstrates a clear understanding that housing and homelessness are one of the most critical issues facing Californians. It includes funding for state housing tax credits, homelessness infrastructure, rental support, and more. There are also a number of areas where we expect -- and will advocate for -- lawmakers to expand and invest more deeply to make impact for all California families. In addition to critical budget investments and policy proposals this year, we also need to prioritize the long term solutions offered in Roadmap HOME to end homelessness and housing instability. Read NPH's full analysis and watch Policy Director Pedro Galvao's key takeaways here. |

| | AB 71 to "Bring California Home" |
| |
|
| In addition to the Governor's proposed one-time expenditure to prevent homelessness, NPH and partners are also advocating for ongoing homelessness prevention programs as well as creating more permanent supportive housing and deeply affordable homes. AB71, also known as Bring California Home, would create a $2.4 billion annual fund through closing corporate tax loopholes to support prevention and services, as well as increasing the supply of permanent supportive housing and extremely low-income housing. The bill will fill gaps within the state’s response and will scale evidence-based solutions, while promoting innovations to move people quickly into permanent housing. AB71 also aims to eliminate racial bias, ensure youth and survivors of domestic violence have equitable access to housing and services, and enhance coordination and collaboration among state and local agencies. | | Goodbye and Congrats to Rodney Nickens Jr. |
| |
|
| NPH Policy Manager Rodney K. Nickens Jr. will be leaving the organization on January 22, 2021. "It is bittersweet to be leaving this dynamic team, however, I am so honored to have served alongside such dedicated and talented advocates," said Rodney. Rodney joined the NPH team in 2019 and was the principal author of " The Road Ahead ," a vision to advance housing and racial justice in the Bay Area. During his time at NPH, the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) appointed Rodney to serve on the Housing Methodology Committee to assist staff in the development of the Regional Housing Needs Allocation. While Rodney is leaving NPH, he's not going far. Please join us in congratulating him on his new role as a Program Officer on the Policy and Innovation team at the San Francisco Foundation, a close partner to NPH. |
