John xxxxxx,

Today is Inauguration Day, and Joe Biden was just sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

Kamala Harris just became the first woman and woman of color to be sworn in as Vice President. It’s history in the making, and long overdue.

Trump is out of office. But he left an immeasurable amount of damage in his wake.

More than 400,000 American lives have been lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, which the Trump Administration completely failed to address. As people woke up to empty seats at the kitchen table, Trump was too busy golfing to care about preventing further loss of life from this deadly virus.

Our economy has been ravaged by the pandemic too, with millions of people put out of work and left to wonder how to pay the bills, afford rent, and put food on the table for their families.

And of course, we can’t forget this administration’s assault on our basic human rights, from separating migrant families and caging children, to the Muslim travel ban, to the militarized response to peaceful protestors calling for racial justice, to the undermining of our democratic elections and incitement of insurrection on the U.S. Capitol.

We have a lot of work to do, beginning today.

Crush the coronavirus. Provide direct relief to struggling Americans. Supercharge the economy. And make sure the Department of Justice prosecutes every single traitor.

With President Biden and Vice President Harris in the White House along with our Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, I’m more confident and hopeful than ever that we can rebuild our country, and as our new President says, build back better.

Let’s pass the American Rescue Plan to provide direct cash payments, extended unemployment, rent relief, food assistance and aid to small businesses.

Let’s get a handle on vaccine distribution. Let’s raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Let’s pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and reform our criminal justice system. Let’s pass the For the People Act to strengthen voting rights and stomp out voter suppression.

There’s so much for us to fight for and accomplish now that we have a real leader in the White House again. Together, let’s get to work.

Keep the faith,

Hakeem
