Lots happening here at Fletcher Foundation this summer. Our new fellow, Kenneth Brown is off to a great start (and also taking the reins of the newsletter you are reading). Longtime AJF grantee, EDCI, pulled off a bunch of awesome summer camps. The Fletcher Academy went through a major renovation, with even more improvements to come. We are also super excited that a new beacon of hope burns bright in southeast Raleigh. At every publication of the newsletter, we will highlight a few pieces of research, topics, or articles that is related to the work we do and happens to catch our eye.

Two leaders in the philanthropic sector discuss efforts to make the words “equity” and “inclusion” more than just words in this piece from our friends at the Philanthropy Journal.

A new study in the America Educational Research Association Journal shows that “school district secession” in the south has heightened racial divides. School district succession is when a community breaks off from their existing school district to form a new on with different boundaries.

A joint study from NPR and the University of Maryland found that lower-income areas, disproportionately inhabited by people of color, are more likely to be hotter than wealthier areas. The study found that in these areas, EMS calls increased for chronic illnesses, heart conditions, and those with high blood pressure.

Damon's Read: A Thousand Small Sanities by Adam Gopnik

In this manifesto, Adam Gopnik makes the argument that liberalism is the search for radical change through humane measures. Gopnik takes us from the 1500’s and Montaigne, a philosopher during the French Renaissance, to the civil rights movement to show the moral adventure liberalism brings and how it’s needed for the continuation of life.

Natalie's Read: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Declining birthrates, natural disasters, and another civil war brought the United States to its knees. In this new dystopian country, an association of women has been created for the sole purpose of birthing children to rebuild society- The Handmaid’s. The book follows the story of Offred (her given name) as she navigates her way in a totalitarian country with memories from life before the war and an ending that’ll leave you wanting more.

Kenneth's Read: Transforming a College (Updated Edition) by George Keller

Elon University is a school that is taking the world by storm. Elon was recently reclassified by Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as a “National Doctoral/Professional” university, a step up from its previous” Regional” category. The U.S. News and World Report put Elon in the top-100 list for national universities. The book shows the rise of how a once small, last-choice university in the middle of Alamance County transformed into an emerging national powerhouse.
