Hi John:
Today, we joined millions of people around the country and watched as Joseph R. Biden took the oath of office and officially became President of the United States. We also beamed with pride as Kamala Harris, a Black and South Asian woman, became the first female vice president, putting a serious crack in the glass ceiling and giving women and girls everywhere permission to dream big.
A record-breaking 141-plus million people voted in the 2020 election, whether by mail or in-person -- despite an ongoing pandemic, the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, and national uprisings around police brutality and systemic racism. We the people proved that nothing could stop us from making our voices heard and ensuring our votes are counted.
This historic moment was driven and led by women of color, care workers, and domestic workers who make all other work possible. And just a few weeks ago, amid a holiday season and rampant voter suppression, we did what so many said we couldn’t do in the Georgia runoff -- we turned out again in record numbers and delivered yet another historic win. We worked together to organize our communities and elect leaders who would govern with care and, in doing so, showed the world that the collective power of women of color is unmatched.
Nothing -- not misinformation, not even violence -- can undermine the will of the voters or delegitimize the success of these organizing efforts. And nothing will prevent us from continuing the important work of building a society and economy that centers care and the needs of women of color.
Imagine if all the current home care jobs, and the millions more that are needed in the next decade, were good union jobs with family-sustaining wages, basic benefits, and training to provide the highest standards of care. President Biden’s Caregiving Workforce Plan and Vice President Harris’ support of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights provides us with an opportunity to fulfill this vision. There is much work to be done, and it won’t be easy, but we’re ready to win our wildest dreams. And we won’t let anything or anyone stop us.
Thanks for all that you do,
Ai-jen Poo, Executive Director
