John,
A new presidency has begun.
A recent survey by Voto Latino found that hopefulness and relief were the two most common emotions Latinx voters chose to describe how they felt about the incoming administration. Now the day is finally here where we can feel relieved and hopeful about the future.
This moment is due to the millions of Americans who worked together to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The Latinx community helped give them Arizona and Nevada while turning North Carolina and Texas purple. And now that we’ve seen the power of our community (just recently in Georgia), there’s no putting the genie back in the bottle.
In addition to President Biden and Vice President Harris’s swearing in today, the U.S. Senate will also be swearing in Alex Padilla as the newly appointed senator from California, and Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff as the newly elected senators from Georgia. All of this thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Latinx community and our movement!
Together, we can finally tackle the tough issues starting TODAY:
-COVID-19 and our future economy recovery
-Comprehensive immigration reform
-Climate change
-And more
Gracias a ti and to everyone who owns this victory: the first-time voters, the organizers, the young people, business leaders, and elected officials. In more ways than one, you made history (Madam Vice President has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?).
With his racist attacks on our community, Donald Trump began this fight. We ended it.
Gracias,
María Teresa Kumar
P.S. 2.3 million more Latinos voted in 2020 than in 2016. But our work is far from over. If you’d like to help Voto Latino register more voters in 2021 and beyond, please donate today.
