John, government failures throughout the coronavirus pandemic have left many
feeling hopeless. But in Wales, seeing the difference that electing Liberal
Democrats can make gives us hope.

Liberal Democrat MS Kirsty Williams is the education minister in Wales. And
her liberal approach is making a world of difference for young people and
students.

In England, some children entitled to free school meals have received wholly
inadequate food packages while their schools remain closed. A private company
was paid £30 to provide vulnerable children with a government free school meal
parcel, but many received what seems to be less than £10 worth of food, to last
them ten days.It’s a disgrace, not to mention a huge waste of money.





Meanwhile in here Wales, money was given directly to councils, many of which
deposited funds directly into families bank accounts.Parents were given the
choice and resources to make the best choices for their children. And even
where food packages were delivered to families, those packages had enough food
and enough variety to properly feed a child.

An independent report by the Education Policy Institute compared education
policy responses across the UK to the pandemic. It shows that Kirsty’s efforts
have been “commendable”, leading the way in delivering Free School Meals and IT
equipment for pupils.





The Conservatives’ response to this pandemic has been to centralise, cut
corners, and hand out expensive contracts left, right and centre. The
difference between English and Welsh free school meals solutions is just one
example of how Kirsty’s liberal approach is improving the lives of children
across Wales.

That’s the difference Liberal Democrats can make, John. And we couldn’t be
prouder.
