John,

I wouldn't have believed you if you'd told me what would happen, four years ago today. Even as I was angry and scared and ready to run for office to stand up for the values I saw threatened, I wouldn't have believed it could really be this bad.

We cannot erase the last four years from our history. We can't undo the family separations or bring back the people lost from COVID-19. We can't pretend that the attack on the Capitol didn't happen. We can't ignore the overt rise in white supremacy.

But today, our long national nightmare is finally -- finally -- ending. He's gone. He can no longer embarrass our country on the world stage. He can't use the power of the presidency to enable racist and nationalist agendas. The office will no longer shield him from the consequences of what he has done.

Now, we can begin to move forward.

Today, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will be sworn into office. I'm so excited for their compassionate leadership to guide us through these times of trouble. We also can't forget the historic nature of Vice President Harris' position -- I know I will be among the millions of women and girls feeling especially proud of our country swearing in the first woman as vice president.

With the leadership of the Biden-Harris administration, and thanks to our House and Senate majorities, we can get our communities the resources they need to combat COVID-19. We can acknowledge the racism in our justice system and try to reform it. We can protect our environment. We can codify reproductive choice in law. We can work to build a country our children will be proud of.

Today, as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris swear their oaths of office, I will take pride in all we did to defend our principles when they were under threat.

I will take pride that -- although the last four years were unimaginably hard on this country -- through it all, our democracy prevailed.

Yours,

Christy
