Today, my friend Kamala Harris will make history when she is sworn in as vice president of the United States.

None of us should lose sight of what a significant moment this will be. Vice President Kamala Harris will be an inspiration to people all over the country, particularly young women and women of color who will get to grow up with the power of her example leading the way.

For me personally, seeing Kamala take that oath of office will also be particularly meaningful: We sat next to each other in the Senate chamber for years. And as we fought tough battles together on some of the most important issues of our time, I'm proud to have known her as colleague - and even prouder to count her as my friend.
