John, tomorrow, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn in as President and Vice President!

There are so many reasons to feel hopeful. The nightmare of Trump’s presidency will officially be over. Harris will make history as the first female, Black, South Asian American Vice President. And the White House will now be occupied by proud gun violence prevention champions!

Biden and Harris’s inauguration is also a reminder that, despite the claims of Trump and his enablers, the power to determine our country’s future lies with we the people. On Inauguration Day four years ago, millions of people marched to reject Trump’s dangerous agenda. And we have been resisting ever since. We continued marching, we called our elected officials, we tweeted, we testified, we donated, we refused to look away.

If Trump’s presidency provided constant proof of the flaws in our democracy, the fact that we withstood it and elected Biden and Harris is proof of its resilience. It is proof that together we can build a better future, even in the face of injustice and misinformation and suffering and intimidation.

Of course, this is not a moment of pure celebration. The nation is once again bracing for violence as Washington, DC and states across the country prepare for a potential second act to this month’s deadly insurrection. As we ready ourselves for what’s to come, we are reminded that yes, there is so much work ahead. But together we can do it.

Onward,
