Dear Neighbor,


Today, the New York State Senate voted to pass my bill to codify updates to New York State’s antiquated Partial Unemployment Insurance System ([link removed]) —a long overdue win for working families across our state.


Did you know?


In New York State, a worker earning $15 an hour for 16 hours a week would get just $75 if those hours were worked over three days. And, if those hours were worked over four or more days, that worker would receive no benefits at all.


That same worker in Vermont would get $227 in benefits no matter how many days they worked!


My bill looks to change that by modifying the way our state calculates eligibility for Partial Unemployment Insurance benefits—determining eligibility based on weekly earnings rather than the number of days worked.


Currently, more than 500,000 New Yorkers across our state are working part-time or being called back to work at reduced hours. That number is only growing.


Passing my bill in the Senate is a first step to ensuring hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers will be able to provide for their families no matter how many days and hours of work they are offered each week.


With our Democratic Supermajority, this new era of reform is only just beginning. And I look forward to continuing our fight to bring real change for working families.
