Hi John,
Are you new to DSA? Familiar with what the socialists are up to, but just moved to the area? Or maybe you just haven’t been able to participate lately? Regardless, we invite members to the New Member Orientation Sunday, January 24th from 2-3pm. This is a great way to learn about what democratic socialism is, what we’re doing on both a local and state level, and how to get involved!
We’re fundraising for the Mutual Aid fund, which is currently running low. With South Bay Mutual Aid, we provide groceries, blankets, masks, and more to those in need. In 2020, we were able to provide:
- $32,000 towards groceries, household supplies, and other aid
- Over 25,000 masks, including KN95 masks during the fires
- 1,648 bottles of hand sanitizer
Plus, we’ve given out blankets during the cold season, we’re working on a new meal distribution project, and an internet access fund to help students get online! And we need money to keep this running.
Finally, the campaign for Medicare for All is picking up steam, and collectively, SV DSA and coalition partners will have amassed over 8,000 signatures for the petition demanding Governor Newsom apply for a federal waiver to fund single payer in California. Please join our healthcare working group at our next meeting on Friday, January 22nd at 7pm. We will be planning outreach for our CA Single Payer CalCare rally, a socially distanced car caravan event, on Saturday, February 6th at noon in Mountain View, as well as our Medicare for All educational webinar on Saturday, February 13th. All events are newbie friendly and open to the public. Please invite your friends!
In solidarity,
Your SV DSA Newsletter Team
PS — We you may have heard, we held an emergency chapter meeting last week to select three delegates to represent our chapter as a part of the regional California DSA exploratory committee. To stay up-to-date on these discussions, join our Slack!
