Hey John,
Join us at this week's Meetup: Building a Strong Community for a Strong Movement to hear important news announcements and updates from the movement! We will be learning about why community is so essential to social movement building and share what we have learned from our own DxE community. Come hear about all our community building efforts like our Meetups, community support system, Circles, and our brand new Geocircles program. There will be fun activities involved, so we want you to be part of this! This meetup will be taking place this Saturday, January 23rd at 11AM at the link dxe.io/meetupzoom.
If you're interested in getting more involved in this active community, apply to become a chapter member at dxe.io/apply.
Here are the other events we have happening this week (all will be taking place in Pacific Time, unless otherwise noted).
- Tuesday, January 19th, 6:30 PM: Q&A with DxE's Lead Organizer - In-person "office hours" with Almira Tanner (DxE's lead organizer) are on hold for the time being, but we've still got the power of the internet! Almira will be hanging out on the Zoom call and available to answer your questions and hear feedback, suggestions, and more. You can join for the whole hour or just for a couple minutes. See the event page details for the Zoom instructions.
- Friday, January 22nd, 10 AM: Animal Shelter Volunteer Day - Join us in helping out at a local animals shelter! Space limited to 10 people so please confirm with Kitty Jones if you are attending. There are various projects we will be helping with including cleaning, organizing, socializing dogs, socializing cats, etc. Face masks are required and we must all respect social distancing. We will be meeting in the parking lot of Jelly's Place at 2905 San Pablo Dam Road.
- Saturday, January 23rd, 1 PM: This is an Emergency: Divest from Animal Agriculture - The evidence is clear, factory farms and slaughterhouses have devastating impacts on the planet, the animals, and the public. Instead of addressing this issue, Berkeley is directly funding this unsustainable and cruel industry. This is why on January 23rd we will come together for a physically-distanced action where we will ask our elected officials to stop spending city funds on animal products. We are meeting at the UC Berkeley Sproul Plaza; masks and physical distancing will be required during this action.
- Sunday, January 24th, 1 PM: How to Change the World in One Generation: DxE Intro Workshop - Right now the most vulnerable individuals are being exploited on a massive scale and it will only get worse if we don’t take action now. But can we as average citizens really make a difference to help them? The answer is YES. In Direct Action Everywhere’s workshop, you will learn the history of social movements, the groundbreaking new research that shows the power of ordinary people, and the bold plan to nonviolently abolish the most harmful industry on earth that kills billions of animals every year. See the event page details for the Zoom instructions.
- Sunday, January 24th, 1 PM: DxE #NoMoreFactoryFarms Postering - We brought the message of immense animal suffering, worker endangerment, climate crisis, and pandemic breeding potential of animal exploitation facilities to social media and the press. This coming January 24th, we are taking the message to the streets! Join us for this physically-distanced postering event to inform and inspire the public to take action for animals and demand #NoMoreFactoryFarms. We will be meeting at the Downtown Berkeley BART Station.
